The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have recently issued a warning to residents about a surge in "smishing" scams. Fraudulent text messages designed to deceive individuals into revealing personal and financial information.This form of cybercrime combines "SMS" (Short Message Service) and "phishing," where scammers send deceptive texts that appear to originate from legitimate sources such as financial institutions, courier companies, online retailers, or government agencies.These messages often prompt recipients to click on malicious links or call fraudulent numbers, leading to potential identity theft, financial fraud, or the installation of malware on their devices.
